At Blue Gum we presently have about 16 alpacas. They range in colour from pure white through fawn to grey and black.
“ALPACA FACTS” · There are two breeds of alpaca - huacaya and suri. There are an estimated 80,000 alpacas in Australia today. · Alpacas are shorn once a year in spring. · They are pregnant for about 11.5 months and have single births. (Twins have been recorded but are very rare). The females are remated about 3 weeks after giving birth. · Cria weigh about 6-8 kg at birth and are usually born in the middle of the day. · Cria - from birth to weaning. · Weanlings - from weaning (5mths) to 12 months · Tuis - 12 - 24 months. · Hembras - adult females. · Machos - adult males. · Young wethers (castrated males) make good pets if well handled. · Older wethers usually make good stock guards and are increasingly being used as such in Australia by sheep and goat farmers, dramatically reducing stock losses at lambing and kidding.

Alpacas do not lick their cria. They bond to their young by making humming and clicking sounds. |
|
The birth of a cria is usually trouble free and becomes quite a family event! |
